Argon and helium appear to be more effective than N 2 itself as a third body in promoting the homogeneous recombination of N(4S) atoms leading to afterglow emission. 5 by He and Ar, respectively (262a), or to be increased by a factor of about 25 by Ar or He (235). In the presence of excess (99%) helium, approximately 75% of the atomic nitrogen recombinations appear to contribute, ultimately, a photon in the nitrogen first positive system (263). This corresponded to a rate constant of approximately 3 x 10~32 cc2 sec - 1 for excitation of N2(B 3Π9) with He as the third body.
